Afternoon Tracks

Track 4 - Design. Deliver. Run

Hear different perspectives on what it takes to create value for customers from 3 extremely experienced Fintech practitioners.

14:00 - Alberta SoranzoFit for survival : Designing your organisation for transformation

Service design places users squarely at the centre of its practice, and fulfilling customer needs is the focus of organisations large and small. What happens though, to the people inside the organisation, especially at times when efforts are mostly focused on efficiency, simplification and cost reduction?

How do organisations transform effectively, and organise their people and the work, to support change that isn’t merely cosmetic and that results in tangible outcomes, both internal and external?

In this talk, Alberta will discuss some of the elements that help organisations transform from within.

14:30 - Jon Smart - Enterprise Agility: Give People a VOICE

You want to increase organisational agility and flow across your large, traditional, organisation.

Organisations are complex adaptive systems, there is not a one-size-fits-all solution. This talk, which is based on lessons learnt from leading agility at scale across a 320+ year old organisation with 80,000 people in 40 countries, shares an approach to enterprise transformation which appeals to intrinsic motivation, is invitation of imposition, has a clear focus on outcomes and is context and framework agnostic.

You will leave with an approach which you can try as soon as you get back to the office.

15:00 - Abbas Haider Ali - Agile IT Operations at Enterprise Scale

Reading and learning about how applications, services, and infrastructure are built and operated at FAANG and other web scale companies can feel like an exercise in self-flagellation if you work in Enterprise IT. There are many advantages to be being a pure bred software company without the burdens of existing businesses to support, high levels of regulation, and legacy technology stacks.

The most agile operations teams that I’ve observed take the seeds of culture, organisational design, operational practices, management approaches, target metrics, and other learnings at web scale and cross breed them with governance, regulatory concerns, and heterogeneity from enterprise IT to build out world class operational agility. This session will cover examples of companies who have successfully accomplished this and the approaches they have taken. You’ll leave with a strategy that you can use in your organisations to increase velocity and agility while preserving core requirements such as security.

Track 5 Simon Powers -  Enterprise Agility Workshop

Many of us are working in organisations who are wanting products and services that are better but delivered faster / cheaper. Often we find that we can do great things at the team level, but once the wider enterprise is considered, things start to stall.

If you are a change agent or leader you may have experienced getting so far with an "agile transformation" and things seemingly falling apart or people reverting to old patterns after a few months or even a year. If this sounds familiar, or you are struggling to know what changes to make or how to work with the right people in the right way to get changes to stick across the org level, then attend this 90 minute workshop.

Together we will choose the topics and explore enterprise agility.

Topics could include:

  • Organizational culture and structure

  • How to engage leadership in a conversation about culture

  • Doing Agile to people in the name of improvement

Learning Outcomes:

  • Techniques you can use to engage with organizational change that creates lasting and sustainable impact

  • Coaching, communication and listening skills required to facilitate large groups of people.

  • How to approach leadership as equals

  • Deep and rich conversation and learning from the audience - surprise learning outcome!

Track 6 - Continuous Integration and Delivery at Scale

This session will start with Angel Rivera (CircleCI) and Rob Vanstone (Xebialabs) demonstrating how they help organisations implement CI/CD.

Dave Farley will then give a presentation which will explore the benefits and drawbacks of various CI/CD patterns along with challenges he faces with some of his clients implementing CI/CD in large scale enterprises and how he tackles them.
